Day 1: Sacramento - Salt Lake City

So 650 miles later, and day one of our adventure is done. It was honestly not as bad as I thought it would have been. My mom and I had a good time listening to music and talking and we stopped whenever we felt like it.

Getting through California was easy…and then we were on our way to hell’s country: Nevada.

One of the only things Nevada had to offer was Reno—and that’s saying something. We did stop though (to use the bathroom). And on our way out of whatever hotel/casino, I got to play the wheel of fortune. Gambling is fun, but boy did that casino smell awful!

So for those of you who ever want to see Nevada in all it’s glory, here it is:

That’s pretty much what it looks like the entire way through. I wish I was lying, but Nevada was pretty boring. So, to pass the time, we came up with some classic car games. Of course there was the license plate game. We’ve already got 23 states and one for British Columbia. We’re also keeping track of all the Slug Bugs we see in every different state. And the last little game we have is a scavenger hunt of a random list of things we may see along the way. If you have any clever ideas for us to search for, leave it in a comment! We’re almost done with our list!

So the only site we stopped to see in Nevada was this place called Thunder Mountain Monument in Imlay. It was by far THE weirdest and creepiest place I have ever seen. (Check out the picture below). I’m not exactly sure why this guy started building a house/monument/whatever in the middle of the High Dessert, but he did. And it’s made out of concrete and scrap from the junkyard. There was only one other car parked near it when we showed up—and not a sign of people. I’m pretty sure they were involved in some creepy movie-like scenario.

Cloud watching was fun too. While I was driving, I saw one that looked exactly like Roadrunner! Meep Meep! I didn’t get a picture of it, but I did get a picture of a cloud that looked like a heart. And if you know anything about me, you know that I love hearts.

We stopped in the town on the border of Nevada and Utah. And of course, there were quite a few casinos. Just as a side note, there are casinos everywhere in Nevada. OK, not everywhere because there’s not much around, but at every stop there is a little casino in it. Even in a little strip mall next to Game Stop there was a 24-hour casino. It’s kind of ridiculous. But anyway, I digress. In this town on the border, the power was out! So that means that none of the gas pumps were working. We were planning on fueling up, but thankfully we still had a quarter of a tank left.

So crossing into Utah (and Mountain Time) we stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This is truly God’s forsaken land. It used to be a huge lake that stretched all the way from Nevada to the Great Salt Lake, but has since dried out in the last few million or so years. All that is left is the salt. The two pictures below don’t even do the vast area of sodium chloride justice!

It was extremely windy that it was creating what looked like fog from all the dust. When I opened the door to the car, it was blown open like a hurricane! But I took a little bit of the salt with me as a memento. As you can see, a lot of people like to go out and drive on it and do donuts. It’s actually a racetrack because the surface works really well for racing or something. And oh, the picture with the Garmin in the window was kind of funny, because it looked like a mini image of what we were looking at. A grey road in the middle of whiteness!

So now we’re in Salt Lake City. It’s a lot different than I expected it to be. First of all, I thought that with such a heavy religious influence, it would be very reserved. But as we were walking to get dinner, we saw quite a few bars and clubs and it is actually a very happening city—kind of. Also, as far as cities go, it’s very clean and pretty pedestrian friendly. At one cross walk, they offered orange flags that you can carry across the street!

Well, I’m extremely exhausted! We drove for 11 hours today. Time for a nice relaxing shower and a good rest in this comfortable, cloud-like bed!
